Ukrainian folk art is an integral part of Ukrainian culture. The creative spirit of Ukrainian people found its expression in various forms, such as ceramics, metalwork, glassblowing, weaving and tapestry, in wooden architecture and woodcarving, embroidery and decoration of “pysanky” (Easter Eggs).
Pysanky writing is one of the more recognizable forms of Ukrainian folk art.
A similarity of basic patterns in different media reflects
the deep symbolism which make Ukrainian folk art a harmonious
whole despite regional distinctions. Geometric motifs which
can be traced back to the painted pottery from Trypillia
at the end of the Neolithic period (2500-2000 BC) are predominant.
Plant ornaments developed later out of these geometric forms.
The Folk Arts Exhibit at the Ukrainian National Museum is
proud to display a variety of folk art objects including
embroidery,
pysanky,
ceramics,
wood
carving, weaving,
tapestry and musical instruments.
